A Junior Engineer (JE), also called the Vidyut Sahayak in Gujarat, is an entry-level position in the government and private sector. Deciding on the merits of a Junior Engineer’s career choice with either Gujarat Energy Transmission Company (GETCO) or the Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL) is not an easy task. Both are Gujarat Government sector companies formed out of the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB). Therefore, let us attempt a comparative study of the two companies, GETCO and GSECL, in terms of career prospects (of a JE).
Background
Both GSECL and GETCO share a similar background and ownership pattern.
GETCO was formed in 1999 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB). GSECL, too, was created out of GEB in 1993. Their formation was part of a restructuring process of the power sector in Gujarat.
Business and Operations
The business of GETCO is facilitating the transmission of electric power from the generating units to the distribution network companies across the state.
GSECL is in the business of power generation. It has a combined generating capacity of 6776 MW in Gujarat. Besides thermal (65 % of total), GSECL produces electric power from other sources like Gas, Lignite, Hydro, and renewable sources (wind and solar power).
Management and Hierarchy
Both the companies are professionally run, with technically qualified people in charge of different functions. The board members are predominantly senior-level government officials. Both organizations have a seven-level hierarchy structure, from the JE to the managing director.
The selection process of a JE in GSECL & GETCO
- The process starts with a notification on the website( for both companies).
- The entire selection procedure, including documents required, test syllabus, is mention in the applicable prospectus.
- Both GETCO and GSECL follow a three-stage selection process, an online written test, document verification, and medical test.
- The written test comprises 100 marks and has five sections.
- The sections are General Knowledge, English, core Engineering Knowledge, Computer Knowledge, and Gujarati Language and Grammar.
- The test generally has 100 questions of 1 mark each. A negative marking (0.25 marks) for wrong answers is applicable in the core engineering section (of 60 marks) only.
Remuneration
The salary of a JE in both companies starts at Rs. 37,000 in the first year. After five years, they are on an Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 1,01,000 payscale after successfully fulfilling the performance parameters.
Which then is a better career option- JE at GETCO or GSECL?
Experts say that basic professional skills and personal skills (communication, teamwork, leadership, and more) influence an individual’s career the most. But in addition, training, work environment, and opportunity also have a significant impact on the career.
With most comparative parameters being similar, GSECL may still offer a slight advantage; the company has a more diversified operation (power from many sources). This can provide just a little better career path to a Junior Engineer.
How to cross the first hurdle?
- Good preparation on the syllabus topics, taking mock tests can help clear the recruitment exam.
- Consulting guidebooks/online guides.
Success in a professional career depends on several factors. Opportunity is one of the critical ones.
A Junior Engineer may face an emergency system breakdown situation within six months of joining. Confident handling of the crisis is a definite career milestone for the youngster.
