Some Mercedes coupes, cabrios, and station wagons are likely to disappear due to electrification. What will remain on the market and what will be phased out of the standard model range in the future?
Mercedes is in the midst of an electric offensive race and has so far fulfilled all of its promises of 10 electric models by the end of 2022: in addition to the Smart EQ, Mercedes EQC, EQV, EQA, EQB, and EQS, which are already on the market, the Mercedes EQE has already been unveiled and will be available in June 2022. Meanwhile, the EQS and EQE SUVs are being launched. The tenth model is a new smart SUV.
Mercedes-Benz has announced that the next phase of its research program will include the evolution of three new specialized electric platforms for the E-Class, AMG. EA for all AMG division products, vans, and light commercial vehicles.
Mercedes Benz Greensboro NC
From 43 to 37 models
Mercedes began to shrink its ICE range in order to accommodate investments in electrification: the catalogue currently has 37 vehicles compared to the 43 that used to be available.
For the time being, the X-Class, S-Class Coupe/Cabrio, AMG GT Coupe/Roadster, and CLS Shooting Brake have all been discontinued.
The X-Class Mercedes Benz Greensboro was a disaster from the start since it was too expensive for a commercial truck, and those who bought it as an adventure vehicle were too few, due to the Mercedes V6 version’s astronomical price.
The S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet were selling in inadequate numbers, and they were starting to compete with the new SL, which had switched to a 2 + 2 seat configuration with the most recent model.
The AMG GT Convertible is also no longer available since it overlaps with the new SL, and in the future, only the AMG GT Coupe will be available, which will outshine the SL. Mercedes did not want to abandon the SL legacy, therefore the AMG GT Roadster was unable to find a home.
The CLS Shooting Brake was replaced in 2018 by the third-generation CLS, which was cannibalized by the new AMG GT 4-door coupe.
The Mercedes CLS might be phased out by 2025
At the same time, the future of the CLS is uncertain because Mercedes already has the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. It would be an irony if Mercedes dropped the CLS, considering it was this model that started the four-door coupe craze in the early 2000s. While the AMG equivalent has a different rear, it has created more internal competition than rival coupes from other companies.
A potential new CLS in 2025 would compete with the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe in terms of AMG versions.
The EQS and EQE, with their aerodynamic designs, eliminate the need for another CLS generation.
At the same time, a Mercedes EQE Shooting Brake is doubtful because Mercedes will have the EQE SUV.
The C-Class/E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet will be replaced with a single Coupe/Cabriolet for two segments:
The S-Class coupe and convertible will be phased out in favor of a single model that sits in the middle of the range. The CLK’s replacement will almost certainly have a convertible variant to replace the C-Class and E-Class convertibles. Due to low demand and need for Mercedes-Benz service, the Mercedes SLC (SLK’s replacement) has likewise been discreetly phased out of the lineup.
A very crowded compact range
The A-Class is available in eight different configurations, including a short and long wheelbase sedan, as well as a four-door coupe known as the CLA. The B-Class might be replaced by a more sumptuous version of Mercedes’ future T-Class, which would be based on the new Citan. Mercedes is still considering a replacement for the SUV sedan (SUL – sport utility sedan) and plans to expand into the small segment. It will be built on the MMA platform, which will replace the MFA II platform in 2024.
The Mercedes T-Models are Also in Danger:
Station wagons do not play a significant part in the US markets, and the shrinking European market is too small for such vehicles to be viable in the future.
Only in Germany is the Mercedes C-Class T-Model popular, although the E-Class T-Model has clients all around Europe. The new C-Class now comes as a station wagon and an off-road variant, the All-Terrain. The two models, which were introduced in 2021, will be part of the program until the conclusion of their current life cycle in 2028. We can’t possible predict what will happen next right now.
To save production costs, Mercedes-Benz may replace the C-Class T-Model and the CLA Shooting Brake with a new vehicle based on the MRA platform. The second-generation Mercedes EQE is expected to debut in 2028, followed by the seventh generation Mercedes E-Class in 2029. Mercedes could also easily replace the traditional model with an electric one.
Both the station wagon and the E-Class All-Terrain will be available in the new E-Class, which will be unveiled this autumn. These would be on sale in 2023, which means they might be available until 2030, when Mercedes claimed, it would stop using conventional power.
