Total time:
An afternoon
Step 1
Decide on the words, names, or phrases you want to paint. Carefully sketch the letters in pencil. Draw freehand if you don’t want them to look too uniform, but you can also print out the words and trace them around them.
Step 2
Paint a base color for each letter. You can use the same color for each note or mix and match as shown. Use a fine brush on the edges of the letters to keep the lines sharp, then use a bigger brush to serve in the rest of the letter. If you want a very matte finish, you may find that you need two coats of gouache paint.
Step 3
Once the gouache is dehydrated, it’s a moment to count the patterns. Have fun with dots, stripes, diamonds, zigzags… wherever your brush takes you. You can use contrasting colors for a bit of vocal or opt for a more muted palette for Be kind Poster.

Gouache painting guide: create your patterns
There are endless ways to create patterns – let your instincts guide you! Whether you’re in nature or scrambling around the house, you’ll find patterns everywhere. Please keep track of the designs and color combinations that draw you in and experiment with incorporating them into your art.
Below are some tips and ideas to get you started, including popular color combinations and ways to combine curves and points with straight lines effectively.
Pay attention to the right consistency! After mixing, the gouache should have the feeling of single cream. It’s a water-based paint, so after it dries, add a little more water to get it back to the right consistency.
Experiment with other media. Watercolors and colored pencils offer a more subtle style if you want to move away from gouache.
Accept your imperfections, and don’t let perfection get in your way. Lines that are less than straight or points that become blunt can often enhance the pattern and create a sense of freedom in your projects.
